Blessings In a Backpack

Many children who rely on free or reduced cost lunches during the school week become food insecure on the weekends. This program seeks to bridge the gap between lunch on Friday and breakfast on Monday. Volunteers prepare bags with meals and snacks designed with kids in mind.

Red Cross Blood Drives

In partnership with the American Red Cross, Acworth UMC aspires to turn compassion into action so that everyone in our community has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products.  We share God’s love by hosting 4 blood drives a year and welcoming our community to donate blood. Volunteers are needed to work at the welcome desk and refreshment table during the blood drives.  You can support this ministry by donating blood and inviting those you know to donate blood.  Our goal is to collect 60 pints of blood at each drive.

Thanksgiving Baskets

Bins of food for over 70 families are purchased and assembled by volunteers or groups who sign up for a basket beginning in November of each year to be delivered in time for Thanksgiving day. Families are selected from people who apply, food pantry and church referrals, and a few Veteran families who need assistance. Opportunities are to contribute or purchase a basket, volunteer to assemble or deliver the basket.

UMCOR Disaster Relief
Supply Mission

In February 2019 Acworth UMC sent its sixth mission team since 2013 to the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, Louisiana. At this strategic location, the UM Committee on Relief hosts over 3,000 volunteers a year who prepare essential emergency relief supplies, ready to ship after natural and human disasters to aid and support the persons and communities  affected.  In addition, volunteers serve local missions and find a spiritual retreat.

The goal is to continue to send a team annually to:
  • Prepare for disaster relief by packing supplies of school kits, health kits, and cleaning kits ready for shipping as needed
  • Fulfill member’s desire to provide hands-on disaster relief if unable to serve on Disaster/Early Response Teams
  • Raise awareness of UMCOR and their vital role in disaster response in the USA and abroad
  • Have the opportunity to engage in short term mission if unable to serve on a foreign mission
